My sister is a glitter gal! She loves everything that sparkles and shines and truly believes that a pinch of the glitzy stuff can save any art project! Which is why, in January and early February you typically find my sister knee deep in glistening gaudiness.
It's this time of year that Mardi Gras madness takes over. Now, most Americans know of the tradition of throwing beads and trinkets from floats and balconies on Mardi Gras Day. What you might not realize is that the 10 days leading up to Fat Tuesday are filled with festivities and parades that rival the Rose Bowl. New Orleans alone sports over 60 parades, each hosted by a different Krewe (sort of like your local Lion’s or Elk’s Club). Each Krewe tries to differentiate itself from the others by handing out unique items from their floats. Some give out doubloons, some hand painted coconuts, decorated throw cups, moonpies, and in the case of our world - hand decorated shoes!
For the past 8 years my sister Freda has created hundreds of one-of-a-kind, amazing, glittery shoes for a beloved client. Our client is a member of the Krewe of Muses, an entirely female Krewe that is known for handing out these scintillating sensations. They have become coveted treasures.
In honor of the over 700 hours my sister invested in creating the 225 captivating clogs, I give you a photo montage of some of her most recent works of art.
