Award Trophies

Award Trophies
Overview:

If you're planning an awards ceremony, or just want to recognize someone's special achievement or talent -- whether it's good grades, "Best Dad Ever," or just making an amazing PB&J sandwich -- get together with your kids to create your own unique trophies!

You will need:
  1. CDs (this is a great way to recycle old discs!)
  2. T.P. tubes
  3. Styrofoam balls
  4. Hot glue gun (requires an adult)
  5. Markers
  6. Decorative items (pipe cleaners, stickers, glitter, ribbon, etc.)
  7. "Creativity Fodder Box" items (plastic cups and utensils, scraps of fabric, cardboard, product packaging, etc. -- anything you find in your house!)

Step 1:

While there are many ways to construct an awards trophy, I'll show you a simple favorite of mine. First, take your T.P. tube and decorate it with markers, stickers, paint, glitter -- anything you want! Once it's dry, place your CD face up and put a ring of hot glue (adults only, please!) where you will be placing your T.P. tube. Attach the tube to the disc.

Step 2:

Put a ring of glue on the top end of the T.P. tube. Remember, when attaching styrofoam using hot glue, you need to let the hot glue cool for a few seconds before placing the styrofoam on it -- glue that's too hot will melt the foam! Once the styrofoam ball is set, you can get to work decorating it. I like curling pipe cleaners and poking them into the foam for a spring-y effect. This is also very easy for littler hands to do, too.

Step 3:

Continue decorating away!

Step 4:

Congratulations! You can now award yourself "Best Trophy-Maker!"

Step 5:

If you have old trophies (sports trophies, academic trophies, etc.) around the house, you can give them new life! (Be sure that the trophy's owner gives you permission before you alter it!)

Step 6:

You can glue things to your trophies, give them a new coat of paint, and turn them into awards for brand-new achievements!

Sophie's Tip of the Week

Start a collection of the classic, funny things that come out of your children's mouth. Jot them down in a notebook or even on small slips of paper kept in a shoebox. When things get frustrating you can always turn to your box for a smile.
