15 - 30 minutes
Step 1:

To begin, you can download our menorah template and either color it and cut it out, or use it to trace the shape onto your construction paper. Or, you can skip the template and cut out a menorah shape of your own. To make it symmetrical, you can fold the construction paper it in half, sketch half of the shape along the fold, cut along your drawn lines, and open it up.

Step 2:

Take your cardboard and punch two holes in it, one in each top corner. You'll string your ribbon or yarn through later in order to hang it.

Step 3:

Using your glue stick, glue the construction paper menorah cutout to the cardboard, keeping the bottom of the menorah close to the bottom of the cardboard. You need to leave room for the candles at the top!

Step 4:

Take your plastic binding comb and cut it into nine segments. Make sure eight segments have at least two "loops" of plastic, and that one has three. (The extra-long one will be used as the shamash in the center of your menorah.) These loops will "grip" your candles and hold them in place.

Step 5:

Hot glue the backs of the plastic binding to the top of your construction paper menorah. (Adults should help with this part!) Remember, the extra-long piece of binding will be for the shamash in the center, with four of your smaller-sized pieces of binding on either side.

Step 6:

Once you've set up your menorah with its candle holders, decorate away! You can use markers, ribbon, stickers -- whatever is handy!

Step 7:

To make your "candles," cut your pipe cleaners up into nine 3-inch pieces.

Step 8:

Take your tri-cornered beads and bead them onto the pipe cleaner. Bend the one end of the pipe cleaner to secure the beads in place.

Step 9:

Continue beading until there's only about an inch left on the pipe cleaner -- you'll need room for the "flame" at the end!

Step 10:

Take your long orange, red, or yellow bead and put it on the end of your candle. Secure it by bending the tip of the pipe cleaner over it, or by adding a spot of hot glue to the pipe cleaner before sliding the bead on.

Step 11:

Finally, take your ribbon or yard and string it through the two holes in the cardboard to create a hanger for your menorah. You can continue to decorate your menorah until it's just right!

Step 12:

Each night of Hanukkah, you can add another candle to your hanging menorah to celebrate the festival of lights!

Craft Tips:

1. If you do not have plastic binding combs, don't worry! Instead, you can use self-stick velcro. Attach one side to the construction paper menorah, and another side to the candle. When it's time to put up the candle, you can stick it to the velcro on the hanger.
2. Make each night a candle making night -- it's the perfect 10 minute time filler.

Sophie's Tip of the Week

If your child is attending a party, be a good guest and let your host know ahead of time if they have any allergies or special dietary needs. You can make things even easier by sending them along with food you know is safe for your child to eat -- your host will surely thank you!
