Tiki Cork Necklace

Tiki Cork Necklace
Overview:

Are you attending a tiki or luau event and in need of accessories? The tiki cork necklace is a great addition to any outfit and an ideal activity for children. Very easy to make and even easier to multiply (should you need a bunch, or are in a creative mood), children adore this craft.

You will need:
  1. Cork (wine cork or bottle stopper)
  2. Leather thong (or string, or twine)
  3. Scissors
  4. Markers
  5. Small eye bolt, 11/16"

No prep time needed!
Time Length:
5 - 15 minutes
Step 1:

Once you are sure you have your supplies, decorate the cork with markers. I'm drawing a face similar to that of a totem pole, using earth tones like black, brown, and orange.

Step 2:

Once decorated, screw in the eye bolt at the top of your cork.

Step 3:

For the necklace string, you want to cut about 2 feet of leather thong (or twine or other string) off the spool. Measure how much string you will need by trying the string around your neck to determine the appropriate length. Once cut, thread it into the hole of the eye bolt and tie a knot on the end. Tip: when establishing the necklace length, make sure it fits over your head to easily take it on and off.

Step 4:

Awesome! You're now ready to hula in style!

Craft Variations:

You can add more corks to elongate the "totem pole" look on your necklace. Just use little jump rings to attach the screw eyes of each cork together.

Sophie's Tip of the Week

Very young children often like tactile objects. For your youngest attendees create a tactile table to keep them occupied. Fills bins with beans, rice, flour, sand - yes, it will get a bit messy, but little hands love running their fingers through the different materials.
