T.P. Tube Candle
Overview:

The holiday season is filled with the warm glow of festive candles. Sadly, the matches and fire that ignite their beauty make them off limits for children! The T.P. Tube Candle allows children to create their own candle arrangements without the fear of fire. Enjoy decorating them and adding them to your home's decor!

You will need:
  1. T.P. tube
  2. Pipe cleaner
  3. Tissue paper (or any other type of paper: wrapping, construction, scrapbook, etc.)

Step 1:

First, decorate the outside of your T.P. tube! Cut a piece of tissue paper that is the width of the T.P. tube, and long enough so that it will wrap around the tube a little more than once. An easy way to do this is place a small mark on your T.P. tube. Place the tube with the marked part touching the edge of the paper. Roll the tube until you see the mark again, then add approximately 1/4 turn more. Mark the paper where the tube has landed. Trim to that mark.

Step 2:

Apply the glue stick to the width edge of the tissue paper. Place the T.P. tube longwise along the glued edge and run your finger across the paper to secure. (You can also use a piece of tape to hold the paper in place.)

Step 3:

Apply glue to the inside of the remaining tissue paper. Roll the tube so that the glued side sticks to the tube.

Step 4:

Make sure to seal the end of your paper onto the tube by applying a little extra glue at the end of the paper. (Or you can secure with tape if you prefer.)

Step 5:

Now it's time to make the wick! Make a loop with your pipe cleaner that is slightly larger than the opening of the T.P. tube.

Step 6:

Twist the pipe cleaner to secure the loop in place. Then, bend the center of the loop to create a heart shape. This shape will help to secure the wick inside the T.P. Tube.

Step 7:

Take the straight part of the pipe cleaner, bend it upward, and coil it upwards to create a twisting wick.

Step 8:

To add the "flame", cut a small square of yellow tissue paper. Twist the bottom corner to create a flame-like appearance.

Step 9:

Place the tissue flame at the tip of the pipe cleaner wick and twist the pipe cleaner around the tissue flame to secure it in place.

Step 10:

To complete your candle, push the loop of the pipe cleaner inside the T.P. tube so that the wick and the flame stick out above the tube.

Step 11:

Your completed candle should look a little something like this -- with your own personal touch, of course!

Craft Tips:

1. You can use duct tape, decoupage, wrapping paper, cellophane, foil, fabric, whatever you like to cover your T.P. tube.
2. Instead of using paper to cover the tube, color it with markers or crayons.
3. Stick an electric tea light (no real candles, please!) inside the T.P. tube for a realistic glow!

Craft Variations:

In the first few steps, you can continue to decorate the T.P. tube to your liking. Use markers, glue, gems, feathers... Here are a few of my own T.P. Tube Candles.

  2. Pipe cleaner
  3. Tissue paper (or any other type of paper: wrapping, construction, scrapbook, etc.)

Sophie's Tip of the Week

Most parents realize that little ones away from home for a long time will inevitably need a change of clothing. Carry the extra set in a plastic bag. You can always use that for holding the wet clothes you are replacing.
