I don’t know exactly when it entered the Maletsky family lexicon, but the phrase “We’re lighting the candles for you,” has become an integral part of my life for at least the past 20 years. It may have started when my husband Scott and I moved from New York to San Francisco 19 years ago, or maybe it was when my sister Freda hit the troubled years of high school... but somewhere along the line, my mother began lighting candles along with her prayers in homage to the trials and tribulations her kids managed to attract.
Whenever there is craziness at work, or an incredibly hard Bar or Bat Mitzvah, you can count on my mom, Sue, reaching for the overly-long wooden matches. I remember one time in particular when she said to me, “Things are not good -- we’re down to our last candle stub, we’ve got to make a trip to the Dollar Store!”
