How to Make Grow Buddies

Watch your buddies grow!
Materials List

Pantyhose or knee-high hose.  You need to have the toe portion.  1 per Grow Buddy

Rubber bands

1 soup-sized can per Buddy

Bucket of water

Glue gun

Sticky back felt, duct tape, buttons, pipe cleaners, construction paper, googly eyes, and any other embellishments

How to
Step 1

If you are using full length pantyhose, cut off one leg at the knee.  If you have knee-highs, you will use one knee-high.  Place 2 tablespoons of grass seed in the toe portion of the pantyhose.

Step 2

Add 2 cups of soil directly on top of your grass seed.  You can use more or less depending upon the size head you would like.  The main thing is to make it large enough so that it will sit on top of the soup can and not fall in.  Tie off the end with a knot, or use a rubber band.  You will end up with a tail of stocking hanging down.

Step 3

If you like, use rubber bands to create little balls on your head for features such as noses, ears, etc.  Add items like eyes with glue gun, glue dots, or tacky glue to create a face. Make sure to leave the top part of the stocking (where the grass seed is) undecorated, as the grass will eventually grow there.  Decorate your soup can like a body.

Step 4

Once everything is decorated, use a cup or a pitcher to fill the can about ¾ full of water. Be sure to leave about 1 1/2 inches from the top unfilled.

Step 5

Take your head and submerge it in the bucket of water.  Get the soil inside moist, but not soaking.  This might take a few dunkings.  (Note: if you have used tacky glue to glue on your facial features, you will want to wait about 4 to 8 hours before submerging).

Step 6

Place the can body in a sunny area, place the head on top of the can, with the tail part submerged in the water.

Step 7

Check your Grow Buddy daily. Make sure to keep his can filled with water (after the initial dunking, you should not have to submerge his head again). In about one week you will start to see growth.
